About our youth-centered initiatives

We are dedicated to supporting the holistic wellness of Black girls and adolescents. We recognize the importance of uplifting the voices and work of parents, families, individuals and communities helping Black youth thrive, grow and heal. We are committed to advocating for policies that help improve and protect the health and wellness of Black youth. Our Gen Z Speaks Wellness program also provides a platform for young people to share their mental health experiences in a culturally affirming way, empowering them to engage in conversations that impact their lives and communities.

Our Lil Sistahs is a vital program that supports Black girls, starting at 13 years old, including teen moms, foster youth and those involved in the juvenile court system. Every month, Our Lil Sistahs brings in expert guests and community partners to provide resources or tools to these incredible young women, whenever possible. The program also offers a space for them to talk freely with each other and receive guidance from their collective “big sistahs." Led by one of our Maternal & Reproductive Health ambassador, Our Lil Sistahs helps young, system-affected mothers in the LA area the way a big sister would: with conversations about our bodies, managing finances, stepping into their power and more.

  • Despite the fact our youth are disproportionately impacted by adverse childhood experiences, research shows that in the state of California, 61% of Black teen girls say they need help for emotional and mental health (when compared to approximately 45% of teen girls in general and nearly 32% of teens overall).
  • 88% of Black teens did not receive counseling in 2020, including at least 42,000 Black teen girls and at least 103,000 Black teens.
  • Black youth are 4x more likely to be removed from their homes and placed in foster care and 2x more likely to experience or witness neighborhood and family violence when compared to white children.
  • Racism has been scientifically proven as a core determinant of child health that has a profound impact on the well-being of Black children, their families and their communities.
  • Over Black children and youth have been diagnosed with COVID-19. Black children account for 13% of COVID-19 DEATHS - nearly TWICE the rate of their share of the population 0-17.

Recent updates and highlights:
  • We celebrated Juneteenth 2025 across the state, including in Sacramento with an intergenerational open mic night.
  • We provided emerging birthworker training for Black teen girls in LA county.
  • We worked in collaboration with The Children's Partnership to develop the Black Children’s Health Fact Sheet.
  • We hosted in-person virtual healing sessions for Black girls. During these sessions, Black girls came together to begin healing from past traumas and foster mental wellness.
  • We held workshops focused self-esteem, image positivity and inner beauty.
