California Black Women's Health Project (CABWHP) proudly announces the celebration of our 30th anniversary, marking three decades of empowering Black women to take charge of their health and advocating for policies that positively impact their well-being!
CABWHP's journey began following an inspirational National Black Women's Health Project annual conference in 1992. Energized by the experience, a group of passionate women from Los Angeles came together to form the Southern California Chapter, led by the visionary Frances Jemmott. CABWHP was formerly established in 1994 to empower Black women to take personal responsibility for their own health and to advocate for changes in policies that adversely affect the health status of Black women.

At CABWHP, we are driven by a steadfast commitment to advocate for policies and practices that promote the holistic well-being of Black women and girls, from preconception to aging, in California. Our mission is rooted in the belief that by empowering women to take control of their physical, spiritual, mental and emotional health, we can effect positive change in the lives of individuals and the community as a whole.
As we continue to chart our path F.O.R.W.A.R.D. (For Our Rights, Wellness, Advocacy, Resources and Descendants), CABWHP envisions a healthier and more equitable world where Black women, girls, families and communities are empowered to make informed choices about their health. We firmly believe that health justice and equitable and accessible quality care should be community priorities, leading to a brighter and healthier future for Black women and girls.

Recent findings from the California Black Women's Think Tank survey reveal the alarming financial situation faced by a significant portion of Black women in California. Two out of five Black women are just one paycheck away from financial instability. The data highlights the disproportionate burden faced by Black women and is a stark reminder of the urgent need for change promoting the health and well-being of Black women throughout the state.
Financial insecurity can lead to increased stress, anxiety and a lack of access to healthcare and nutritious food, which can, in turn, result in physical and mental health problems. It can create a vicious cycle where Black women and families may forego preventive care and healthy lifestyle choices due to economic constraints, ultimately jeopardizing their overall well-being. The survey's identification of structural inequalities, racism and discrimination as factors limiting income and opportunity underscores the systemic barriers that Black women continue to face. These disparities must be addressed through meaningful policy changes and support from policymakers, advocates and community leaders.
Furthermore, it is crucial to acknowledge that disparities in funding for Black women-led organizations, including California Black Women's Health Project, remain a significant challenge. Inequities in philanthropic giving and private and public support leave organizations like ours in a constant state of addressing significantly greater needs and requests for services from our communities with fewer resources to support those needs and requests.
The results of this survey serve as a compelling call to action, urging us all to work together to address the pressing issues and disparity gaps that affect Black women in California. We must ensure that the health, wellness and financial security of Black women and Black women led organizations are no longer overlooked or neglected.
With your help we can support the health & wellness of Black women, girls, families and communities.
