CABWHP 12TH Anniversary Gala
On June 15, 2006, the California Black Women's Health Project (CABWHP) honored "Women Who Dared" during our 12th Anniversary Breakfast Gala & Online Auction held at the elegant City Club on Bunker Hill in downtown Los Angeles. This year, we paid tribute to three outstanding women: Angela Bassett (Actor), Sylvia Drew Ivie, J.D. (former Executive Director, T.H.E. Clinic), and Rosemary Turner (Vice President, Southern California, District United Parcel Service). We were once again delighted to have Rachel Boesing (Today in L.A. weather forecaster, NBC4) emcee the event.
Crystal Crawford, CEO of CABWHP, opened the program with a stirring a cappella rendition of a Sweet Honey and the Rock song "We Who Believe in Freedom". Her performance immediately captivated the audience and helped those in attendance to reflect upon our purpose for gathering that beautiful Thursday morning. We gathered because there is still work to be done to eliminate the health disparities that effect Black women and girls and to honor three women who have worked tirelessly to improve the lives of Black women and girls.
The award presentation ceremony was inspirational. Each honoree shared their heartfelt concerns for the well-being of the Black family, community and the strength of our legacy. Their words were so compelling that there were moments when you could see tears flowing from the eyes of some of the attendees. The beauty of the event continued with musical and dance tributes by vocalist Cammie Knight and dancer Kelly Graham. We also premiered our Black Women's Mental Health PSA, produced by Women in Film. This year, we held our first Online Auction as part of the festivities in order to raise additional support for CABWHP programs such as the Advocate Training Program and Young Women's Initiative. Our 12th Anniversary Breakfast Gala was truly an empowering and successful event! We hope to see you next year.
