12 Commandments of Good Mental Health

The following policy recommendations with respect to mental and emotional health were outlined in the findings of the California Black Women's Health Survey of 2000-2001.

  • Create and disseminate The 12 Commandments of Good Mental Health that outlines the parameters for mental and emotional well-being.
  • Train and educate counselors, spiritual advisors and community leaders to recognize and address the mental health needs of Black women.

With input from members of our Policy Advisory Group (PAG) and Advocate Training Program (ATP) participants, CABWHP has developed The 12 Commandments of Good Mental Health. We are seeking funding to conduct an extensive outreach campaign to: (1) encourage Black women to prioritize their mental and emotional health; and (2) eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health.

The California Black Women's Health Project's 12 Commandments of Good Mental Health are:

  1. Good mental health is essential to your overall well being.
  2. Know your family's mental health history.
  3. Acknowledge your feelings, thoughts and experiences.
  4. You deserve to feel well.
  5. Recognize and journal your mood changes.
  6. It is okay to ask for help.
  7. Research and reach out to mental health resources.
  8. Know your limits; set healthy boundaries.
  9. Nurture and protect your spirit.
  10. Trust the healing process; it takes time, support and work.
  11. You are worth it; make yourself a priority.
  12. Commit to fun and relaxing activities.
