You could feel the electricity in the air as nearly 150 women and men gathered at the lovely City Club on Bunker Hill in downtown Los Angeles in the penthouse of the Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday morning August 24, 2010 to recognize three outstanding women for their countless contributions to the community.
The program opened with a riveting dance tribute performed by Tamica Washington-Miller, Associate Director of one our community gems, the Lula Washington Dance Theatre. Then our CEO Crystal D. Crawford Esq. welcomed everyone, shared the purpose of the occasion, and gave an update of the life changing work of CABWHP. She shared that the only statewide organization solely devoted to improving the health of California's Black women and girls, the scope of CABWHP's work is broad. The range of issues includes reproductive justice, cancer prevention, environmental justice, sexual violence and mental health to name a few.

Advocate Training Program 2010-2011:
Empowering Black Women
to be Tomorrow's Health Activists
CABWHP will soon begin training a new group of Northern and Southern California health advocates through our innovative Advocate Training Program (ATP). The ATP is a 9 month program which includes a ten-week course that meets for approximately 3 hours per week. The 2010-2011 ATP will have a special cohort for young women ages 18-30. However, sisters of ALL ages are encouraged to apply. The ATP is designed to train women from the grassroots community to become effective health policy activists and advocates. Since 2002, the Advocate Training Program has produced over 100 women's health advocates trained in Black women's health issues, media advocacy, community organizing, strategy development and policy advocacy. In 2006, we trained our inaugural Northern California class of advocates in the East Bay. The 2010-2011 ATP will empower a new set of health advocates to enrich our advocacy, activism and dialogue with policy makers. Applications are available now! Space is limited so submit your application as early as possible!
